Botulinum Toxin

It is a molecule produced by Clostridium botilinum. This organism is found in any environment and is the cause of food poisoning contaminated with it, mostly canned goods and meat, called Botulism. The bacteria produce a neurotoxin (a substance that affects the nervous system) very potent in small quantities that paralyzes muscles and can cause cardiac arrest leading to death of individual. Botulinum toxin is the most potent biological toxin known to date, there are eight classes of which the A is the one that has been used in many fields.

The neurotoxic properties of toxin A have been exploited in diverse areas ranging from its use as a biological weapon, use the medical field to treat some diseases that present with signs of increased muscle activity as certain eye diseases and disorders characterized by involuntary muscle movements.

Recently, this toxin has been widely disseminated for their kindness in treatment and prevention of aesthetic problems, mainly against the appearance of expression lines.

The best known commercial form of botulinum toxin A is produced in the United States under the name BOTOX ®.
